As part of our Durga Pujo 2012 celebrations, AmarPujo Family is bringing you a Durgotsava show, "Culture Within"- an ensemble of our very own in-house talents.

We are opening our show with the worshiping Durga Maa-in an agamoni dance.

To represent the beautiful folk culture of Bengal, there will be a folk fusion dance on the song "Fagunero Mohonay" performed by the acclaimed Bangla band BHOOMI. Along with that we will also be showcasing a myriad of different types of Bengali Folk dances in the form of a dance drama called "Pallikatha"

In the spirit of doing something different this year we will also be presenting a hilarious 'mime act' about a man who goes crazy trying to battle the daily challenges and stresses of a family life

There is no Bengali who doesn't enjoy "Purono diner Bangla cinema" and their melodious music. Our girls are performing on one of the most popular songs of the movie Basant Bilap- "Ami Miss Calcutta 1976", whereas the boys are doing a soccer ensemble on "Shob Khelar Sera Bangalir Tumi Football" from the movie Dhonni Meye and of course for all Indians no dance show is complete without a bollywood number, so our girls will be performing on an all time puja favourite hindi song, “dola re dola re” from the movie Devdas

Needless to say Bengalis are nothing without music so our our very own talented in-house singers are going to touch a chord with a beautifully scripted story of a girl writing a letter to her Mom while being nostalgic about past events and pujo which includes classic Tagore songs like "Bhalobashi bhalobashi" to more recents hit songs like "Roopkothara" from "Aparajita tumi" and so on..

Last but certainly not the least, we will have a Fashion Show by all kids of AmarPujo family of various age groups showcasing evolution of fashion in Bengali Pujo through ages.

So as you can see we have a variety of powerpacked performances for your entertainment. See you all there !!

Please check our Schedule section for more program details.

Explore Bangaliana without borders - Max your pujo experience with rhythm of Dandiya

Navratri in Sanskrit means "the festival of nine nights". The festivity of this occasion dedicated to the worship of Goddess Shakti. The Goddess Shakti is the other avatar or incarnation of Maa Durga. Throughout India people celebrate Navratri in various and enthralling ways. In North India Navratri is a pious occasion where people fast for nine nights and celebrate the tenth night, or the 'Dussehra' with immense joy and festive clamor. The last four days of Navratri is celebrated with great pomp and show as Durga Puja by our very own Bengal. In Gujarat and Mumbai people delve into the festive waves of Navratri with the Dandiya and Garba dances, the very essential part of the Navratri celebrations!

Why should the people of Canada miss out on all the fun and festivity?! Thus thinking about our Canadian friends the Amar Pujo team has extended its reach to ensure something for everyone. Along with our Durga Puja celebrations, this year, Amar Pujo team is arranging for the 'Dandiya Night'. It is all about rejuvenating and strengthening our social bonds.

So, hey there! Get those glamorous dresses and dandiyas ready, for the celebrations and the dance floor is not too far from reach! Let the festivities begin!!

“Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu, Shakti Rupena Sankshita, Namasteshwai, Namasteshwai, Namasteshwai, Namo Namoha...”

Mahalaya symbolizes 'homecoming'. The occasion marks the arrival of Maa Durga and is observed seven days before the actual puja starts. Through invocations and chants Bengalis, all over the world, prepare for 'Maa' to descent on this earth.

On this auspicious occasion the chant by late Birendra Krishna Bhadra reverberates in every Bengali ear and sends a thrill through their spines.
Birendra Krishna Bhadra gives words to the feelings for welcoming Maa Durga, and thus his chant 'Jago Tumi Jago' meaning 'Arise O thou Arise'. The magical voice of Birendra Krishna Bhadra behind the 'Mahisasur Mardini, a radio program playing in each Bengali house at the very dawn of Mahalaya is an inevitable phenomenon. The legendary narrator recites the holy verses and tells the story of Maa Durga, the supreme power who destroys the evil in her inimitable style.

Mahalaya is marked by several practices. It is on the dawn of Mahalaya that the artists of Kumartuli in Bengal paint the eyes of the idol. This practice is named 'chakshudarshan' or
'chakshudaan'. Thus Mahalaya marks the eve of Durga Puja letting each Bengali heart present in India or abroad make its dub-lub faster. The occasion makes each one of us impatient, as we start counting days for the arrival of the puja; we are excited that puja is just round the corner and that Maa Durga is all set for her voyage to visit us. Come let us all delve into the exuberant waves of festivity. Let the fun and good times usher in soon!

Amar Pujo Team wishes you all a very Happy Mahalaya !!!
